Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson mourns the departure of the extra person in his and his wife’s polyamorous relationship on UMO’s third album, aptly titled Multi-Love.
Psychedelic, funky, good old-fashioned rock-n-roll and everything else in between, it is clear from just the first two tracks of Multi-Love that this album was meant to offer a surplus of musical genres. From the Stevie Wonder–reminiscent soul on “Ur Life One Night”, to the foggy psychedelia of the Steely Dan–inspired “Necessary Evil,” Nielson explores a range of sounds, dousing each with bluesy falsetto.
We caught Unknown Mortal Orchestra on Wednesday at The Fonda Theater. Check out photos of the night from contributing photographer Silver.
