Ziggy Stardust, the Starman, the Thin White Duke, Major Tom, Alladin Sane (A Lad Insane), Jareth the Goblin King: David Bowie. Call him what you want because each nickname assumed a legendary status.
It was with the slew of Bowie-created alter egos that the English musician stood out amongst artists of past and present times. The ability to transform himself into characters and produce an unbelievably eclectic group of songs throughout his career truly made him a one of kind musician. Bowie possessed the essence of a true performer; becoming consumed by his characters as to utterly convince of an actual transformation.
At times swallowing those characters’ whole, Bowie would transform himself on and off the stage. During the 1970’s a period when the Thin White Duke was in full effect, Bowie famously lived off a menu of cocaine, red and green peppers and a glass of milk to wash it all down. For his fans, it was time period to witness Bowie’s release of Station to Station, a musical transition to funk and soul combined with synthesizers and motorik rhythms.
Along with the countless hits that topped the charts and became the anthems for musicians and fans alike, Bowie released yet another successful album, Blackstar, this past Friday, the same day as his 69th birthday and two days prior to his untimely death.
Throughout his career, he has sold an estimated 140 million records worldwide. In the UK, he has been awarded nine Platinum album certifications, eleven Gold and eight Silver, and in the US, five Platinum and seven Gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
