Spectators: Identity, Perspective & Experience

Grace FenlasonFebruary 11, 2017

The Athen B. Gallery is hosting “Spectators,” a group exhibition featuring three spectacular artists with separate but complementary styles. The exhibition explores the elements that define human nature. The artists take on identity, perspective and experience to study what makes us human.

Caleb Hahne is one of three participating in the group exhibition. The Colorado-based artist has been featured in solo and group shows all over the west coast as well as New York and Europe. He has been named as one of the top 10 contemporary artists under 40 by Wide Walls, as well as an artist to watch and a top Colorado creative by Denver Westword. His work is a seamless blend of classical forms that communicates multiple narratives. Caleb uses this depth in Spectators by exploring the power of symbolism in figure and mark making.

The second participant, Michael Reeder — a Los Angeles-based artist — is better known for his poppy paintings that combine a sometimes ominous realism with modern bold lines and colors. He has been published in magazines such as New American Paintings, Juxtapoz Magazine, and Graffiti Art Magazine. By creating a “collage-esque look” in his work, his paintings open a conversation about identity and the individualized self.

Molly Bounds, the final participant, is currently an artist-in-residence at the Redline Contemporary Art Center and has shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. The Metropolitan State University graduate describes her work as a study on the correlation between self worth and otherness. Her work is a showing of minimalistic figures convey incredible and moving depth and emotion.

The opening reception for “Spectators” is Saturday Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in Downtown Oakland. All artists will be in attendance for the opening reception.
