Annu Kilpeläinen’s Technicolor “Joyride” Lands at Fisk Gallery

Alex KhatchadourianSeptember 13, 2017

Annu Kilpeläinen’s work is like a fantastic splash of summer – it has a bright, energetic presence demanding your attention, but it’s also effortlessly cool. Annu simplifies designs and ditches detailed outlines with technicolored flower patterns, cars and heroines that make for an original and boisterous style that we seriously love.

While Annu’s images are powerful and strengthened by her use of big, flat, and vibrant shapes, there is still a softness and delicateness to each piece. Even those that are centered around the hardware of cars and planes, which come up pretty often for Annu who really appreciates crappy old cars like Carollas, there is a lightness, and joyous vibe to it all.

Annu will be showing a series of new works this Saturday September 16th with Fisk Gallery at Bad People in Los Angeles, called “Joyride”.  From the pieces that Annu has previewed from the show, it seems like the Finnish artist is still playing around with the same visual cues – flowers, tan women, cars – but in a more abstract-leaning style. Check out a couple of the new pieces below, and don’t miss her show which runs for a month.

Opening reception for “Joyride” – September 16, 7:00pm at 805 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.
